Tips on Improving Fuel Efficiency
We at Bayer Ford are proud to offer a diverse variety of Ford vehicles that boast powerhouse performance specs, premium features, and excellent fuel efficiency. While most Ford vehicles enjoy great gas mileage on their own, there are plenty of small, easy ways for you to maximize your fuel efficiency on the Stephenville roads even further! You don’t have to make major changes to your daily routine to make the most of your fuel tank–following just one or two tips will make a significant improvement! The service team at Bayer Ford has all the details on how to improve your gas mileage in the guide below.
Nine Ways to Improve Your Gas Mileage On the Road
- Accelerate softly. Hammering on the gas pedal can put major strain on your fuel tank. One of the easiest ways to improve your gas mileage is to apply the accelerator slowly and smoothly instead!
- Plan ahead for traffic. Frequently stopping and starting puts unnecessary stress on your powertrain and is a waste of fuel. If your commute takes you through significant gridlock in Weatherford, consider leaving a bit early or taking a different route that avoids some of the worst traffic.
- Avoid high speeds. The faster you drive, the more fuel you burn. An easy way to maximize your fuel efficiency is to keep your speed between 55 and 65 mph on the highway–just be sure to always stick to the speed limit!
- Coast to a stop. Just as hammering on the gas pedal wastes fuel, so does coming to a screeching halt. If it’s safe to do so, try taking your foot off the gas and letting your car coast to a slower speed before gently applying the brake.
- Drive slowly on hills. If you’re driving in an area with a lot of hills, keep a slow speed when ascending and coast as far as possible when coming back down.
- Use air conditioning sparingly. Using your AC on full blast can increase your fuel usage by as much as 20%, so consider leaving your windows open as an alternative to running the air conditioning.
- Keep your ride light. There’s a reason that smaller cars tend to get better fuel efficiency–the heavier a vehicle is, the more fuel it burns. If you drive a larger vehicle, try to leave as much unnecessary cargo at home before leaving.
- Monitor your tire pressure. Underfilled tires can burn a lot of unnecessary fuel, so keep a frequent eye on your tire pressure–if your vehicle has a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), it’ll let you know if you need to fill your tires up.
- Use cruise control. If your car comes with cruise control, consider using it whenever it’s safe to do so. Edmunds.com has found that using cruise control can improve your gas mileage by up to 14%!
